Should I be stressing

Mrs Jumblerant is expecting our first child in March. I'm getting ready; we have already bought a stroller, a pack 'n' play, diapers, creams, lotions and potions.

Should I be stressing?

I seem to be sleeping well, I'm not moody or on edge - am I missing something?

Friends tell me to get some sleep now as that's all I'll be getting for the next 20 years.

Any hints or tips?

  1. Buy a lot of burp cloths, cloth diapers work great. If you think you have enough, you don't.

    Buy a Boppy.

Keep a close eye on diaper levels. Nothing sucks worse then having to go to the store at oh dark hundred to get diapers. When you get to about 10 buy more.

We use homemade wipes. They're great and cheap. I feel like a hippy when I do it though.

Go give your wife a back rub. :)

  2. Use a sling. The best way to keep the baby asleep during the day.

  3. Eh, some people love the sling, some don't. I'm not a fan unless I'm out and about. That, and if I have him in it during the day, he sleeps. Then he won't sleep at night.

Not that he sleeps much anyway, which is why I'm wake at 0240.

  4. Mazal tov to you!

Whoever told you to sleep now was right. My last uninterrupted night's sleep was on 29 Jan 2003, two days before my oldest daughter was born.

And they're right about the diapers. Always always always always have extras handy. However many you think you'll need, you'll really need more.

A corollary to that: always keep an extra outfit handy. It's amazing how many clothes a baby can go through.

Personally, I like the sling. Try it. Try a baby bjorn. Try lots of stuff, and go with what works.

Remember that babies are tougher and more flexible than they look, and than we think.

Mostly, though, have fun! Babies are a lot of work, but the work only gets harder as they get older. Enjoy this time while you can, take plenty of pictures, and good luck, 'cause you're gonna need it.

  5. BUY TYLENOL. Nothing sucks worse then frickin' going to Walmart in the middle of the night with a screaming feverish baby.

And burp cloths. Don't forget. And more diapers.

    And burp cloths.
    And more diapers.

    You get the point.
