The EMS units here have changed their emergency tones from a wail to the European undulating racket so as not to scare the public.
In the office where I work, we keep the window open a crack so that we can hear the siren.
We had a siren again yesterday morning, and another one today, at around 10 am.
It doesn't make my blood boil. It doesn't drive me into a rage of hatred. It simply makes me sad that in 2014 ANYONE has to be in their bomb shelter or protected area.
We should be bigger than this, we should be better than this.
If you want 'facts' about Gaza, you can find them below / here.
If you want opinion about the war, here are some videos:

From a famous US Jew (parental consent is advised):
In all honesty, I'm just tired of it all. "You killed 3 of ours so we're going to get 33 of yours" who are we? The Crips and the Bloods from West Side Story?
Peace and love guys, peace and love.

Sirens, Home and the Iron Dome
A few people have asked me to write about my experiences in the last week or so, here in Israel.
Just a few fun facts for you: I'm a father of 2, husband, employee, manager and, obviously, like to think of myself as just another normal guy.
Siren Song
It was with a sense of disbelief that I walked into the air-raid shelter at work last Wednesday morning. This is the kind of thing everyone was expecting:
But this is more like what it was:
So it didn't phase us that much.
And then that evening we had the siren at home.
A different kettle of fish altogether when you have to gather up your kids and put them in the protected room.
The mere fact that every structure built after the Gulf War has to have a reinforced room, by law, tells us all a bit about what kind of area we live in!
Luckily, this time around, we need only stay int he shelters for 10 minutes, and there is no 'all-clear' sounded. People just decide when it works for them.
Iron Dome
What a game changer! Or is it? Similar to the Patriot Missile System int he Gulf War, I think we're going to be hearing a lot about 'near misses' and shrapnel falling all over the place, but for right now, it is keeping us mentally safe too.
Not to give too much away, but there is an Iron Dome unit about 1km from our home, and boy is it reassuring when the rockets blast off! Scary, loud and somewhat worrying just how thin our defensive line is, but altogether I wouldn't say 'no' to it.
Funny side note - I was reading the blog post Game Changer by In From The Cold all about Iron Dome and its benefits, when I heard a couple of loud bangs yesterday. yes, it was the Iron Dome at work again.
Politics
I don't care about the politics. I care about people I don't know throwing explosive rockets at my house.
Here is a politician talking about the situation:
So for now there is talk of a cease-fire. Thats great. It just doesn't take the threat away, it just leaves it standing. An en passe that cannot be resolved.
Having said that, Hamas is getting attacked on TV and elsewhere by it's old friend, Egypt:
So whatever happens in this region in the next 12 months is anyone's guess!
Although I doubt we'll see a one state solution any time soon.

Iron Dome - The Video
I've been a tad busy recently what with there being a war in our neighborhood 'n all. That seems to be over for the near future, thankfully, but here is the real secret behind Israel's success. I don't want to sound all 'hippy' and such, but really, without this amazing piece of technology, Israel would have suffered many more fatalities and injuries than it did.

Distance from bias? Myas
I read a few blogs every day - maybe a 100, maybe 500 - depends on the wife, work and if the latest episode of 'Pineapple Dance Studios' is downloaded.
Louis from Pineapple Dance Studios
So now to the title of the blog - Reuters. And Hamas. A lovely couple.

So now to the title of the blog - Reuters. And Hamas. A lovely couple.
My response to Reuters? - "Distance from bias? Myass"
Hamas was upset at an on-line ad that was seen at the Reuters Arabic service site, offering a $10 million reward for information on the whereabouts of Gilad Shalit.
Reuters' response to the terrorist group is instructive.
Palestine Today reports that Reuters responded to the criticism, saying that it was an automated ad placed there by Google Ads, and not - Allah forbid! - placed by any Reuters staffers. After all, an ad that seeks to free a prisoner illegally held in an unknown location without any access to the Red Cross would be thoroughly offensive to any Reuters employee, right?
Reuters then cravenly added that they immediately acted to remove the ad, and "we are now taking steps to ensure non-recurrence of such things in the future."
Reuters additionally wrote back to the offended terrorist organization that Reuters has a long history of covering the Middle East in a neutral and accurate manner, stressing that they are committed to continuing this approach, they wrote "We are clear and faithful to our principles of integrity, independence and distance from bias."

Whats all the fuss?
So some Israeli's took out the murdering fool Mahmoud al-Mabhouh whilst vacationing in sunny Dubai. No doubt between meetings to help the elderly and infirm in gaza he was looking to buy playground equipment and exercise books for needy children. (How does that sarcasm icon look again?)
I have no clue why the Brits and the Irish are so wound up about the use of their passports in this operation. Its a backhanded compliment as to the ability of their citizens to travel the world as they want!!
And why is no-one moaning loudly about the murder of a known terrorist but the use of dodgy passports gets the ambassador called in?
I do appreciate what Neptunus Lex wrote and suggest you go here to read the blog entry and the comments.

After all, what’s the world coming to, when a murderous terrorist operating outside the arm of justice can get snuffed achieve martyrdom while attempting to make more mayhem?

UNacceptable, UNimpressed and now UNderfunded
The most calm and collected country in existance is probably Holland but Canada comes a close second.
It therefore behooves me to mention that there must be something seriously fudged up at UNWRA (United Nations Refugee Works Agency) which administers 59 refugee camps for Palestinian Arab refugees and their descendants who left their homes in the wake of the 1948 war.
UNRWA maintains Palestinian Arab refugees in their facilities under the premise and promise of return to homes and villages from 1948 that no longer exist.
So what is the matter here then? Seems like a perfectly normal United Nations way of wasting money.
Canada has not only stopped paying into, but has actually withdrawn funds from UNWRA because it has been documented that Hamas terrorists have been chosen by the UNRWA labor union to actually administer UNRWA facilities.
Yes, it actually takes a report commissioned by the European Parliament to get people to notice whats happening in UNWRA. So why has only Canada left UNWRA and no-one who actually has a seat at the European Parliament? I don't know either!!
