The US Government in Shutdown

I was a bit confused when I first heard that the US Government was shutting down because Congress had an issue getting their job done.

It turns out that certain arms of the government are not going to receive their funding so they started their quickest way of saving money - sending the employees off on unpaid leave or furlough.

According to my calculations, based on an article in the New York Times, 784,710 of the just under 2 million employees affected will go on furlough.

784710/2000000 = 0.392355

So 39%.

Not much really.

So why all the furore? Maybe because Washington's trash won't be picked up.

Or is it because Al Gore might just turn off the internet as he walks out of his office?

Perturbed by Coca Cola Advertising

The first thing I noticed about this video was that Coca Cola weren't calling it an 'advert' or a 'social media' whatever, but were calling it a video. Interesting change of approach.

And then i saw the video and felt surprisingly emotional about it:

Which I guess is today's version of the classic Coca Cola videos, just without the 'buy a coke now' music playing in the background.

Which in turn is not that far off this 2010 advert, which must have cost a pretty penny!

I'm perturbed.

Facebook Alibi Saves Jailed Teenager

Over on Sky News (aka Fox in a British accent) there is a charming story about a teenager who is jailed for a crime but has a Facebook entry as his alibi;

Rodney Bradford spent 12 days in prison after being arrested on suspicion of holding up two people close to his home in Brooklyn.

But the 19-year-old was eventually released after an update on the social networking site placed him at his father's flat across town in Harlem.

The whole article can be found here

And what kind of update did the young bastion of society send?

'Rodney Bradford is'....
upset at world hunger
going out with the guys
lol-ing at Glee

No, Rodney Bradford's jail breaking message on Facebook was 'where my IHop?'. The message was intended for his pregnant girlfriend who he hoped would cook him breakfast.

For that alone I would throw him back in the slammer! Too lazy to make your own breakfast, but up and about and faffing around on Facebook? 21 days your honor!!
