New Music Evolving

My big thing recently, apart from the family and work, of course, is music at work.

I sit in an awesome office with some of the nicest chaps on the planet, but sometimes I just need to crawl into my own headspace and think.

English: Garbage in 2005.YouTube is an upcoming platform for music (but I digress)  as is SoundCloud and Grooveshark. Facebook is one of the more unusual places I've gotten latched onto a new singer, and in this instance at least, I am very happy I did. as it led on to another talent and then another!

My first surprise was when Garbage (left), a band I have always loved, posted a video on facebook of Kawehi covering one of their classics. I had to listen and was impressed:

After I had listened to it a few times I let it play in the background and then it led to another awesome artiste, KHS:

So whats next?

I'll keep you updated, unless, of course you have some music for me to listen to! Post it in the comments...

Password Puzzle

mail, local banking, original bank account, work computer, work email, Google Analytics, AdWords, Webmaster tools, LinkedIn general, LinkedIn Ads, Facebook. CMS as work.

Gmail. iTunes. Office WiFi. Car.

Password (game show)
Password (game show) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Just a few of the passwords / pass codes that I need to remember in my every day life.

Between you and me (please don't tell the world) the majority of access passwords are written down on scraps of paper and then pinned to my wall, that way, if someone wants to break into my Google Ads account then not only do they need to have an insane desire to do so, but they need to be in my office too!

Generic passwords are not my thing. Using 'Password' as a password seems a bit silly to me. Phone numbers mixed with dates or names are probably the best way to go. Or zip codes.

So here is a nearly plausible scenario about a standard recovery password.

Enjoy!

YouTube Music Awards - A Surprising Winner

I love all things Google, thats why this blog is written on Blogger and in Chrome. I won't say that everything they do is amazing, like any multinational organisation they have their good points, and their not so good points.

The latest thing to come out of YouTube is their Music Awards. Instead of pressing a button to vote, or submitting your email address, they have chosen a much better way. Tweets, likes and G+s.

Very simple. You like an artist? Tweet, FaceBook 'like' or Google+ the YouTube Music Video of them.

Nice.

I voted for her majesty the Katy of Perry for she is funny, gorgeous, voluptuous and a real person.

So I was happy to see that a hospital had done a cover of her latest single 'Roar'. And it rocked:

See if you can keep your eyes dry through that!

Boston Bombers - The Fallout

It is generally acknowledged that Fox News is somewhat right-wing but I was surprised to see just what kind of anger and argumentative reporting they were able to give out so quickly after the dust had settled:

So Jon Stewart fired back regarding Miranda Rights and The Consitution:

The King of Video Ads

I work in internet advertising. Yes, I get paid to watch YouTube, go on Facebook, LinkedIn and Google all day long. A tough life, but someone has to live it!

Anyway, I came across this amazing video the other day, espoused by many as the pinnacle of video advertising (oh, and it may not be fir for watching at work or at home);

What do you think? Did it make you thirsty?

What is the Internet?

An interesting question, no doubt. The internet is a place where everyone can place and retrieve any information they want. Simple enough? Oh, but how they do it, what tools they use and how we ourselves interface with it is something else altogether.

I think this little video explains it very well.

Here are some ideas that blew my mind with how great they were, and just how bloody easy they are too.

Now why didn't we think of that?

How Not To Get Hacked

I just received a direct message on twitter from a chap I've known for 25 years. I know it wasn't from him. He's in a different time zone so I haven't called hi yet, but I KNOW his account has been hacked.

It is not nice, it is somewhat scary, so here are the main ways that will protect you from getting hacked;

1. Use A Strong Password

No, 'password' is no longer the most prevalent password out there, but apparently '123456' is. Quite sad really.

A very strong password should ideally include random upper and lowercase numbers and symbols but the latest articles I read about this state that the best password must have a 4 word based password. Quite complex to create but once done, is basically impossible to break.

In order to create an unforgettable password it is suggested that you look around your workplace for inspiration.

An example might be ‘telephoneWhiteOutiPhonemouse’ or in the case of the chap in the cubicle above, 'filefileboxpen'

A memorable phrase

Take a memorable phrase and use the first letter of every word varying he cases. I would use something such as “Do you feel lucky punk?” and convert it into “DyFlP?”

I would consider adding numbers at the end to further confuse hackers thus creating the best password ever on the planet “DyFlP2012”. So please don’t tell anyone…

2. Upgrade Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X
Older software simply means that the hacker has had a longer time to work out where the ‘backdoors’ are in the software. Updated software has patches for these issues.

3. Install Modern Wed Browsers
Que? What you talking about Willis? What the puck is a web browser? In simple talk, a web browser is what you use to visit Facebook, Gmail and Boobies.
I use Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, each of them fights hard to ensure secure systems.

4. Use a password manager software such as RoboForm or kaspersky or you can look at a review of 10 different password manager software platforms here

5.  Write down your passwords! A colleague of mine just lost access to his Gmail account. The account he uses for accessing google Analytics. Its not the end of the world and only data can be stolen, nothing can be changed, but the hoops he (and I ) are going through to get it sorted out are quite time consuming

Please Help The Blueberry

Yes, I know it is an odd title but our friends over at The Blueberry need our help.

A bit of background:

The Blueberry Cove Inn is a 1870's home which has been lovingly restored into a gorgeous get-away in Narrangansett, Rhode Island.

They've had their blog going since '08 explaining how they converted the neglected house into a warm and welcoming B&B.
Christmas at the Blueberry Cove Inn

They're good peeps and they need our help!

In an effort to expand my business I have applied for a business grant sponsored by Living Social and Chase Bank. In order to be considered for the grant I need 250 votes from Facebook users to get to phase two of the application process. I have 170 this morning.
What can we do to help?

So, if you are a Facebook user and could take a minute to help, go to www.missionsmallbusiness.com
At the bottom right hand side there is a button that says "log in and support." Hit that, use your facebook sign-in and then you will see a page with search boxes at the bottom of the page. Search for Blueberry Cove Inn and register a vote. Very simple. You don't have to like my page on Facebook (although you would be more than welcome!) or do anything else.
Go - do it here, now!!

I do enjoy me some new music, and Pomplamoose is one of my fave new bands. I've written about them when they did a great cover of Angry Birds music.

And here they are again, showing just what great musicians and indeed, actors and dancers, they are as they begin the change from popular music to electronic:

What do you think?

And if you go and look at the old videos you'll see how Jack changes his style...
